Prayer To The Night Time
A prayer to the night time And the world’s
just pushin’ out there A party in the next room Dog barkin’ down the
street at the moon The school yards are empty, children sleeping When
they’re older they’ll sit by a window Thinking of the old times, teachers'
lies
A bottle on the table Mostly empty like the life of an old
man Hands on a Bible, eyes wet and a prayer for survival The barroom’s
full of townsmen, and their thinking Which changes with the end of the
evening When they go home to their lives and their wives
An unmade bed
for sleeping Sheets ain’t been washed for years, so it seems And the
lovers who laid there Separated as life does with its dreams And so few
know the heartache of the failure In the alley with the wine in his
fingers He’s given all his cares just to lie there
