Out On the Plains
(click on the title to hear
an excerpt)
Out on the plains the wind is blowin’ Over the
graves where the grass is growin’ There's a shadow of a crow sliding across
the land And a pile of bones that once was a man
Down by the creek
there were two lovers, They made sweet love there like so many others But
the creek dried up and the memories did fade It's rocky and hard now where
once love was made
In the old part of town the buildings are
empty There used to be smoke rose from all those chimneys Miles away the
new freeway hisses Leaving behind a world that nobody misses
I often
wonder where my father did go I’d ask my mother but she died a few years
ago I asked my grandma when I was seven years old She hugged me and
kissed me and said, “Son, some things you best not know.”
So I look
out on the plains where the wind is blowin’ Over the graves where the grass
is growin’ There's a shadow of a crow sliding across the land And a pile
of bones that once was a man
